To get cited by AI, your page has to be found and trusted. Let Google and AI crawlers reach and index it. Answer the question at the top of the page, then cover the questions around it. Show who wrote it, give every number its source, and keep it accurate. Describe your business the same way everywhere, because AI answers cite sources they can trust.
How AI finds a page to cite
An AI answer that searches the web can only cite pages it finds:
- Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode. They use Google’s index. To appear as a link, a page “must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.”
- ChatGPT. ChatGPT search sends queries to other search providers, according to OpenAI. OpenAI also crawls the web with its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. Sites that block it “will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers.”
If search engines and AI crawlers cannot reach your pages, nothing else in this article helps.
What makes a page worth citing
- It answers the question at the top. The answer comes first, then the detail.
- It covers the questions around the main one. Google’s AI answers turn one question into several related searches, and a page that answers only the main one is found for less.
- It says who wrote it. The author, and why they know the subject.
- Its numbers have a source. Every figure names where it comes from.
- It is accurate and current. Updating a page means changing what it says, not the date on it.
What makes AI trust your business
An AI answer decides which sources to trust before it cites them. Trust comes from what is said about your business everywhere: your website, your Google Business Profile, reviews, directories, articles, and forums. Credibility does not come only from your website.
Trust can’t be planted. Some websites hide instructions in “Summarize with AI” buttons to make their readers’ AI assistants favor them. That is AI recommendation poisoning, and it costs you your readers’ trust.
What Google’s AI answer says about getting cited by AI
The search: how to get cited by AI
-
“To get cited by AI search engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, you must write direct, factual answers that AI models can easily extract and attribute to an authoritative source.”
PartlyClear answers help, but only once the page is found. Google’s AI answers link only to pages that are indexed and eligible to show in search.
-
“Place a clear, concise answer in the first 40 to 60 words under every heading or question.”
PartlyAnswering at the top holds. The 40 to 60 words is a formula. Google says it has no preferred word count.
-
“Format your H2 and H3 tags as exact questions that match how users speak to AI.”
Not requiredHeadings that say what each section answers help. They do not all have to be questions.
-
“Limit your paragraphs to two or three sentences to make the text scannable for retrieval systems.”
Not requiredShort paragraphs are easier to read. Neither Google nor OpenAI publishes a sentence limit.
-
“Include specific numbers, data points, and named sources every 150 to 200 words.”
MisleadingNumbers help when they answer the question and come with their source. A number on a schedule is padding.
-
“Include visible expert credentials and author bios to signal trustworthiness.”
HoldsWho wrote the page, and why they know the subject, counts.
-
“Update your core pages on a regular 30- to 90-day cycle, because AI tools strongly favor recently refreshed information.”
MisleadingUpdate a page when what it says changes. Google asks whether you are “changing the date of pages to make them seem fresh when the content has not substantially changed.”
-
“Build visibility on reference-style or neutral platforms like Wikipedia or major news outlets, which dominate platform citation preferences.”
DependsMost businesses cannot get onto Wikipedia or into major news outlets on demand. Credibility beyond your website starts with what you control: your Google Business Profile, reviews, and directories.
AI answers change from person to person and from one search to the next.
Why the better question is how AI finds your business
A citation is a result, not the work. It happens when an AI answer finds your page, trusts it, and uses it to answer a question. What is the difference between AI citations and mentions? covers what a citation is.
Chasing citations leads to writing by formula: a word count for every answer, a statistic every few paragraphs. Working on being found brings the citations with it, and the mentions too.
A citation is not the goal either. What counts is whether the people who find you choose you, then call, book, or buy.
The question to ask is how your business gets found by AI.
Frequently asked questions
How do you get cited by AI?
Get your pages into the search indexes AI answers draw on. Answer the question clearly at the top, show who wrote it, give your numbers their sources, and describe your business the same way everywhere.
Does ChatGPT cite websites?
Yes. ChatGPT responses that use web search can include citations, and selecting one opens its source.
Do you need a special format to get cited by AI?
No. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and it has no preferred word count.
Does getting cited by AI bring traffic?
It can, when the person clicks the citation. Not everyone who reads the answer clicks.
What is the difference between being cited and being mentioned?
A citation links to a page as the source of the answer. A mention names a business in the answer itself.
