An AI mention is when an AI answer names your business. An AI citation is when the answer uses a page from your website as a source and links to it. You can be mentioned without being cited, and cited without being mentioned.
What is an AI citation?
A citation is a link to a page an AI answer used as a source. In Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google calls these supporting links. In ChatGPT, responses that use web search “may include citations,” and selecting one opens its source.
A citation shows your page was used to answer the question. It can also bring a visit, when the person clicks.
A Google AI answer can have two kinds of links. One is a link on a name in the answer’s text, which points to the thing named. The other is a source link at the end of a sentence, which shows where the answer got that sentence. Only the second one is a citation.
What is an AI mention?
A mention is your business named in the answer itself: in a list of options, as a recommendation, or as an example.
A mention can come from anything the AI read about your business: your website, reviews, directories, articles, and forums. An answer can name your business without linking to a single page on your website.
The AI answer
For this question, Business A and Business B are two options to consider.
Sources
Mention. A business named in the answer itself.
Citation. A page linked as a source of the answer.
Here, your website is cited, and Business A and Business B are mentioned. Your page helped write an answer that names someone else.
What Google’s AI answer says about citations vs mentions
The search: what is the difference between AI citations versus mentions
-
“An AI mention names your brand directly in a generated response, while an AI citation provides a link or footnote crediting your specific web page as the source of information.”
HoldsThat is the difference.
-
“AI Mention: The model writes your company or product name into the text of the answer. It signals that the AI recognizes your brand within a topic or category, building general awareness.”
PartlyA mention can do more than build awareness. When the answer names your business as a recommendation, it can be what brings the call. A mention can also get your business wrong, so read what it says.
-
“AI Citation: The model supplies a clickable link, number, or source card pointing to your website. It signals that the AI used your content as evidence or supporting data, which can drive direct referral traffic.”
HoldsA citation shows your page was used, and it can bring a visit when the person clicks.
-
“An AI can cite your research or data as a source without ever mentioning your brand name in the text—meaning a competitor might get recommended using your facts.”
HoldsThat is being cited without being mentioned. Your page answered the question, and the answer can name someone else. The “Mention-Source Divide” label is new. The point is not.
-
“Mentions put your name on the user’s shortlist during decision-making, whereas citations prove content authority and provide a path to your site.”
PartlyA citation shows your page was used. It does not prove authority. Google’s AI answers also cite forums, videos, and social media posts.
AI answers change from person to person and from one search to the next.
What mentions and citations look like in a local search
For a search for used heavy equipment for sale in one city, Google’s AI Overview opened with links to a listing website and a classifieds website. Below them, it listed local heavy equipment dealers as business cards, each with a rating, an address, and buttons to call, get directions, or visit the website.
AI Overview
You can browse regional equipment listings through a listing website or check local peer-to-peer options on a classifieds website.
Local dealers

Construction equipment supplier
Street address
A short description of what the dealer sells.
3.9 (29)
Construction equipment supplier
Street address
Mention. A business or website named in the answer.
Citation. The source link at the end of a sentence, showing where the answer got it.
Everything named in this answer is a mention: the two websites in the first sentence and the dealers on the cards. The link icon at the end of the first sentence is the citation. It shows the page the answer took that sentence from.
The Website button on each card goes to that dealer’s website. It is a way to reach the business, not a source for the answer.
Should you care about citations and mentions?
Not as a goal. Chasing citations and mentions misses the point. What you want is to show up when your customers ask, in Google’s results and in AI answers.
Even that is not the whole point. Showing up is being found. If your business shows up in a thousand AI answers and nobody buys, it did not work, unless being seen was all you were after.
The same goes for rankings and traffic. A website can have a million visitors and few leads, and leads that do not close. Traffic, leads, and sales are three different numbers.
Being found is one piece. After that, the people who find you have to choose you, then call, book, or buy. That part happens on your website and in your business.
What the numbers on citations and mentions measure
You will see figures like the share of citations that come without a mention, or a mention rate for each AI tool. Most of them come from companies that sell AI visibility tracking. They run a set of prompts through AI tools and count what comes back.
The prompts are the ones picked for the tool, not the ones your customers ask. AI answers also change from person to person and from one search to the next. For this search, Google’s AI answer listed a different first source signed in than in an incognito window, on the same day.
The figures show a direction. They do not measure what AI says about your business.
How to get cited and how to get mentioned
Citations come from your pages. To appear as a supporting link in Google’s AI answers, a page “must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet.” The page also has to answer the question clearly, at the top.
Mentions come from what is said about your business everywhere. Describe your business the same way on your website, your Google Business Profile, directories, and review sites. Credibility does not come only from your website. In the Google results for this search, LinkedIn articles and YouTube videos showed up next to websites.
Both come from the same work. What is SEO and Should you optimize your website for AI? cover what it takes.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI citation?
A link in an AI answer to a page the answer used as a source. Google calls these supporting links in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
What is an AI mention?
Your business named in an AI answer, as an option, a recommendation, or an example, with or without a link to your website.
Can an AI answer mention my business without citing my website?
Yes. An answer can name your business from what reviews, directories, and other websites say about it, without linking to your website.
Should you try to get more AI citations and mentions?
Not as a goal. What counts is showing up when your customers ask, and whether that turns into business.
Does being cited in one AI tool carry over to the others?
Not necessarily. Each tool searches its own way. Google’s AI answers draw on Google’s index, and ChatGPT search sends queries to other search providers, so the pages each one cites can differ.
Where do AI mentions come from?
From anything the AI read about your business: your website, reviews, directories, articles, forums, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
Can you track AI citations and mentions?
Tools run a set of prompts through AI tools and count what comes back. The prompts are picked for the tool, and AI answers change from person to person, so the figures show a direction, not a measurement of your business.
