What is AI SEO?

Alie Jules Updated 4 min read

AI SEO is the work of getting your business found and surfaced in the answers AI writes - Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity - whether it is named, recommended, or cited as a source. Because those answers draw on pages that already rank, it is the same body of work as SEO, not an addition to it. The term is also applied to using AI tools for SEO tasks, a separate practice that accounts for most of the disagreement over what AI SEO means.

What is AI SEO?

AI SEO is optimization for AI-generated answers: making your website and your business clear and consistent enough that answer engines retrieve your pages, interpret them correctly, and surface your business by name. The same work is also called answer engine optimization (AEO) and generative engine optimization (GEO).

Google’s AI features and most AI assistants build their answers from pages that rank in search, so AI SEO does not stand apart from SEO. It is SEO practiced in a search landscape where the answer can appear before any click.

The term is used two ways. Some definitions cover optimizing for AI-generated answers; others cover using AI to automate keyword research, content production, and audits. The Reddit thread that ranks first for “what is AI SEO” opens on that same confusion.

AI SEO vs using AI for SEO

Using AI for SEO is a matter of method: AI tools applied to research, drafting, auditing, and analysis. It changes how efficiently the work is done, not whether your business appears in an AI answer. AI SEO is defined by its outcome, and that outcome can be reached with or without AI tools. Google’s position on AI-generated content concerns its quality, not how it was produced.

What AI SEO involves

Google states that appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode carries no additional requirements and that SEO best practices apply. The work rests on five conditions:

  • Indexing and ranking. AI answers that search the web retrieve pages from a search index. A page that is not indexed, or does not rank for the searches the system runs, is not considered.
  • Pages that lead with the answer. A concise summary followed by supporting detail gives an answer engine a passage it can use.
  • An explicit statement of what your business does, who it serves, and what it does best. AI answers repeat what a page states; they do not infer positioning a page leaves implicit.
  • Coverage of the surrounding questions. Answer engines expand a single question into several searches, which Google calls query fan-out, and draw on pages that answer each part.
  • Corroboration beyond your website. Reviews, directories, articles, and other sources shape how your business is described. Credibility does not rest on the website alone.

What Google’s AI answer says about AI SEO

The search: what is AI SEO

Checked September 30, 2026, in an incognito window

  • “AI SEO is the dual practice of using artificial intelligence tools to automate and enhance traditional search optimization tasks, and optimizing content so that AI-driven search engines and conversational platforms cite and display your brand.”

    Holds

Both uses of the term are current. Only the second determines whether a business appears in an AI answer.

  • “Instead of competing solely for a ranked blue link, you optimize to be featured inside the generated answer block.”

    Misleading

AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on pages that rank, and Google states that they require no additional or special optimization. Ranking is the route into the answer, not an alternative to it.

  • “Using AI for SEO Workflows: Leveraging machine learning and natural language processing (NLP) to streamline optimization processes at scale.”

    Not required

Using AI tools to do SEO work is a way of working. You don’t need it to be named in an AI answer.

  • “Keyword & Intent Research: Utilizing predictive modeling and semantic analysis to find long-tail phrases and uncover user intent gaps.”

    Partly

Finding what your buyers ask, and how they phrase it, is where the work starts. Predictive modeling is one way to find it, not a requirement.

  • “Content Generation & Structuring: Crafting clear topic clusters, clean headings, and schema markup that make information easily extractable for AI parsers.”

    Partly

Topic clusters and clear headings hold. Schema does not: Google states that no special schema.org structured data is required for its AI features.

  • “Technical Audits: Automating site audits and analyzing crawlability factors (such as ensuring AI bots aren’t blocked by your robots.txt).”

    Partly

Crawl access holds. Google lists allowing crawling in robots.txt among the fundamentals for its AI features. Automating the audit is a way of working and does not affect whether your business appears in an AI answer.

  • “Performance Tracking: Measuring metrics like mention share, citation frequency, and inclusion in generative search results rather than traditional rank tracking alone.”

    Depends

AI answers vary by person, by day, and by phrasing. A tracker records the answers it was served, which may differ from the answers your buyers see.

AI answers change from person to person and from one search to the next.

Run the same evening in a signed-in browser, the search produced a different answer, one that attributed all four of its recommended strategies to a single SEO agency’s page and video.

Beneath the AI Overview, the top organic result was a Reddit thread asking what the term means. Its top answer dismisses the name as a way to sell SEO under a new label, and Google’s own related questions include “What is AI SEO called now?” I would say the name is a new label on work that was already part of SEO, and that the work itself has grown.

AI SEO vs SEO, AEO, and GEO

AI SEO, AEO, and GEO name the same work. AEO is the oldest, in use by 2018 for the answer boxes at the top of Google’s results. GEO originates in a 2023 research paper, and AI SEO keeps SEO in the name. Set side by side, SEO, AEO, and GEO differ in name and history far more than in practice.

The label does not change the work. Being found in Google’s results, in AI Overviews, and in AI assistants is one body of work, carried out at the same time rather than as a second phase after SEO.

What you need to know about AI SEO

  • AI SEO is sold as a standalone service. Ask what the engagement includes and how it connects to your existing SEO.
  • It is also sold as a tracking product. AI answers vary by person, by day, and by phrasing. In my own searches, the same question produced different answers across ChatGPT, Claude, and Google on the same day, and a minor change in wording changed which companies were named.
  • Google remains the dominant source of search traffic. In August 2026, Google accounted for 88.55% of search referrals to websites, while AI chat tools combined accounted for less than 1%. That is why optimizing your website for AI starts with ranking in Google.

Frequently asked questions

What does AI SEO mean?

Optimizing your website and your business to be found and surfaced in AI-generated answers, including Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. The term is also used for applying AI tools to SEO tasks.

Is AI SEO different from SEO?

No. It is SEO as it is practiced now. Google states that SEO best practices apply to its AI features, and AI answers draw on pages that rank.

Is AI SEO the same as AEO or GEO?

Yes. All three describe getting a business into AI-generated answers.

Is using AI to write content AI SEO?

No. AI-assisted writing is a production method. Whether the content ranks, and whether your business is named in AI answers, depends on what the page says and how it is built.

Do I need an AI SEO agency?

You need the work, not the label. Ask any provider exactly what the engagement includes and how it connects to your existing SEO.
